Today, Alex Whitlock gave members a fascinating presentation on the 2024 excavations at Upper White Lee, Higham, undertaken by members between March and September last year. There was a small selection of the many finds from the site, ceramic, stone, metal which covered the large table; plenty of shards of pottery dating from 16 – 20 century for members to handle and assess.
Although no evidence of medieval structure or any early medieval artefacts have been found to date, there is evidence of early activity/occupation at the site. We hope to carry out further excavation there this year. Who knows?? We may find some answers to several questions concerning this site – watch this space for further details!
We will be continuing with our monthly fieldwalks, held on the second Saturday of each month (unless otherwise notified). These usually begin with a pre-walk coffee and chat at Booth’s cafe, Barrowford, 10.30am.
However, the next fieldwalk, scheduled for Saturday, 8 February, will be at Wycoller, looking at some of the very interesting buildings and landscape features there. Please meet at Wycoller, lower car park, 11.00am. Wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather and some rough ground and bring refreshments.
Look forward to seeing you there.
