Alex Whitlock led a group of members on a very informative walk around Sawley, following a pre-walk meeting at Booths café, Barrowford. It was a very pleasant stroll on a mostly fine day. With the help of an appraisal of 12th century Sawley Abbey, we tried to identify the various humps and bumps in the fields surrounding the Abbey. Walking around the village it was interesting to see how many fragments of carved masonry had been incorporated into the buildings of some of the local houses and barns – a sort of treasure trail. There was so much of historical interest in such a small area. Everyone enjoyed the day and learnt a lot.
